Advantages of the use of Litz wire

Reduction of the Skin effect. - In direct current, the current density is homogeneous throughout the conductor. In alternating current, and as the working frequency increases, it is observed that there is a greater concentration of density on the surface of the conductor and a decrease in the centre. This phenomenon is known as the skin effect or Kelvin effect.

This means that at high frequencies the electrons tend to circulate in the most external area of the conductor, in the form of a corona, rather than over its entire surface, which in fact reduces the effective cross-section of the conductor and increases the conductor resistance. This phenomenon can be detrimental in transmission lines connecting high-frequency devices.

The Litz wire is a braid of insulated enamelled wires which homogenises the current density and optimises the "usable surface area" of the cable. This results in a number of major advantages:

- High winding efficiency.
- Improvement of the quality factor "Q".
- Space reduction.

- Higher current flow than with conventional cables.
- Lower temperature.
